I had a few other chicken shots from 2011 and wanted to try this guy. I loved painting the high key colors on this one. The colors looks crazy if you focus on them but it works (I hope) as a whole.

Well, this is it for 2015. Another 100 in the books. I'm going to take a week off and then try to keep on painting. I feel like I feel like I've learned so much over the last 45 days and don't want to lose that momentum. Happy new year!!!Adam Houstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03088575706007114973noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454029335597865829.post-44406376635231866702015-12-29T15:46:00.000-05:002016-01-08T22:08:50.475-05:00No. 349 - Barnyard Hen (2015)

I was completely running out of ideas at the end here and decided to go back through some old shots. As I got into these I thought it would be fun to revisit some of the existing paintings and see how differently I would see them. We've had unusually warm weather lately and I was able to take some time this weekend to paint at Lake Lanier. The clouds and sky were changing fast while I was painting, so those pieces had to be laid down very quickly.

Here's the last painting I did during my workshop with James Richards. I felt a little goofy painting something like this during an event like that, but my daughter had requested a painting of "bunny" and I wanted it to be a good one. As with the others, James helped me see the colors that I did not pick-up on and made it better in so many ways.

This painting takes me back to No. 18 from way back in 2010. We've moved on from baby shoes, but all I can still see is her growing up way too fast. Here is the second painting from my workshop with James Richards. Much like the last one, he caught me just in time and helped push this painting into a different place. I had all this detail in the tree on the right, and he brushed all that out to show how much stronger it can be when you simplify.

This painting features Faith Chapel on Jekyll Island. We were there this summer, and the light was so clear on the church that I knew it would be fun to paint. I had a workshop coming up with James Richards and saved this one to work on during the weekend.

At the workshop, I got the painting to the point where I normally drive it off the cliff when it was my turn to receive feedback. James picked up the paintbrush, studied it for a minute, and then started painting. It was unbelievably helpful to see someone so talented take over where I constantly fall. So much of painting is decision making, and it was fascinating to watch his process directly change something I was processing.

Needless to say, I painted this but it was James who made it what it is. He painted directly on this and made it what it is.Adam Houstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03088575706007114973noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454029335597865829.post-51025348965107814392015-12-12T08:30:00.000-05:002016-01-08T22:10:01.887-05:00No. 336 - Single Pomegranate

I've know for a while about "lost" edges but always get wound up when I'm painting and want things to be crisp and clear. I really tried hard to let the right side of the pomegranate disappear and have that line be more invisible.
Compared to No. 195 from a while back you can see how that works (I think) a lot better. Carol Marine talks in her book about objects looking "cut out" and stuck on with beginner painters.
This was painted on-site just off the Chattahoochee River near Buford Dam. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to start with an 11" x 14" on a scene like this, but I had hiked in and was going to walk out with something. This was the first time I had to pack-up because the sun was going down. I've not painted a lot in Winter, and you don't realize how fast the sun starts going down this time of year. I was glad though, they were closing the parking lot, and I made it with 2 minutes to spare.
Here's a view of a small stream off the Chattahoochee River. I actually painted this scene first on site, then did this one, then finished the original Plein Air one. I wanted to do it again because it was so hard on-site and I thought I might have more luck working from a photo. No such luck. After getting in several ruts with the landscapes I've decided to try some still life paintings as a way to mix it up. Looking back over 2015, it's hard to believe that this is really the first one I've done. It was a lot of fun painting this and getting back with the pears.
I bought some Centurion linen panels after the recommendation by James Richards and those things are wonderful to paint on. He's a little painting of the morning fog and mist in Chattanooga with a few cows grazing. I love painting scenes like this because it forces you to intensely look at what you are painting and not fall back on "rules."Adam Houstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03088575706007114973noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454029335597865829.post-6078963953250489322015-11-18T09:08:00.000-05:002015-11-18T09:08:35.956-05:00No. 327 - Highlands Garden Sunlight

I've been in a funk lately and had been staring at this canvas for almost two weeks before jumping in and finishing it. It's a bit of a mess, but sometimes you have to complete something so you can move on. Or at least I do.Adam Houstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03088575706007114973noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6454029335597865829.post-90855034374706977092015-11-16T09:35:00.000-05:002015-11-16T09:35:10.672-05:00No. 326 - Haw Creek Trees

We've been having so much rain here in Georgia lately. One Saturday we had a window where was only misting and our family spent some time at a local park. It had been weeks since I painted outside, so I bright my small pochade kit and knocked this out while Evi played.Adam Houstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03088575706007114973noreply@blogger.com0
